Ready, Set, Food! Survey Reveals Schools Nationwide Recognize Need to Protect Food Allergic Students

More than 60% of Parents Say their Child’s School Has Nut-Free Areas with Almost 20% Saying the Entire School is Nut-Free

LOS ANGELES – August 22, 2019 – Ready, Set, Food!, the allergist developed system that helps prevent 80% of food allergies and reverse the troubling rise in food allergies, today executed the first annual Food Allergy School Safety survey to raise awareness of how schools are accommodating the more than 1 in 13 children suffering from food allergies in America. According to the survey, 62% of parents reported their children’s schools offered nut-free accommodations for students in addition to 19% reported their children's schools are entirely nut-free. 

Additional notable survey results include:

  •       An alarming 38% of parents with children ages 3-17, who attend school say there is no nut-free area in their child’s school
  •       Higher-income families (those making $100,000 per year or above) are more likely to have nut-free lunchrooms or tables (41% vs. an average of 26%)
  •       1 in 4 parents with children ages 3-17, who attend school (24%) are not at all sure if their child’s school has nut-free areas
  •       Dads are more likely than moms to admit they are not sure about nut-free areas in their child’s school (31% vs. 17%)

The survey results indicate that while schools nationwide are reacting to the increased number of students with food allergies by introducing nut-free areas, many students are not currently protected. There is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that all students that suffer from food allergies – no matter their socio-economic background or parental status – have access to a safe, inclusive environment at school.

“Education is the key. Promoting food allergy awareness will help ensure that schools offer a safe and supportive environment for all students as one accidental exposure can have life-threatening consequences,” said Katie Marks-Cogan, M.D., Pediatric and Adult Allergist, and Chief Allergist for Ready, Set, Food!. “These results do show an increasing level of awareness in certain populations, however, there is still no cure for food allergies. Therefore, prevention is very important. Recent clinical trials show that the early and consistent feeding of allergenic foods to infants, starting at around 4 months of age, can actually help prevent certain food allergies.”

On March 18, 2019, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released new guidelines for preventing childhood food allergies and other allergic conditions, such as eczema. These guidelines are based on a review of all current evidence from clinical studies, including the recent landmark LEAP (Learning Early About Peanut Allergy) and EAT (Enquiring About Tolerance) studies on food allergy prevention. Most notably, the new guidelines recommend introducing your baby to allergenic foods as early as 4 to 6 months of age, to help reduce their risk of developing food allergies.
